12 Month Organic Gardening Calendar

About Us

For the past decade, I have been searching out and gathering information to plan my annual gardening program. Each year I moved closer and closer to an organic program. Finally in 2003, as my child was old enough to be outside and start rolling around in the grass, we dedicated ourselves to an organic landscape. I spent ridiculous amounts of time researching and gathering as much information as I could. I developed a list of General Seasonal Gardening Guidelines for planting, feeding and caring for my landscape which initially consisted of various plants, flowers, trees and shrubs. As I got more involved I designated areas of my yard for fruits and vegetables and the birds and wildlife. As the landscape became more and more diverse, my simple list of seasonal garden tasks became harder to manage and it soon became the basis for the calendar.

Our commitment began with an organic lawn and we cut the chemical fertilizers and weed control cold turkey. We started aerating, dethatching, leaving the clippings on the lawn and feeding with corn gluten meal. I began to excel at recycling yard waste for compost and brewing compost tea. As my lawn was well on its way to reestablishing itself naturally, I observed as year after year, it needed less water and the weeds regressed more and more. This past summer my lawn had less than half the weeds it did just two years ago. My lawn is full and lush and green while my neighbors is burnt out from the end of the summer heat. I began to apply the organic principles I first learned on my lawn to my existing flower gardens and shrubs with the same success. I continued to study and learn more about what the soil needs and how and when to sow and feed what plants. As I became more and more involved I started to expand my garden landscape. I created spaces for cut flowers, wildflowers and vegetable gardens. My organic landscape was really starting to grow and flourish, literally. It started to become difficult to plan, track and schedule the preparing, sowing, feeding what and when. Thats when I realized I needed some time and planning help and the Organic Garden Calendar was created. The calendar is a tool that combines years of research and information gathering and the methods that I have used successfully for years.

There is nothing in the organic gardening calendar that is new, necessarily; but what it does is provide you with a planning tool to help with your annual gardening plan. The gardening tips and information provided does not have to be followed exactly, unless you would like to of course. It does, however provide you with a quick monthly reference of typical organic gardening activities for each weekend throughout the year. I have combined the various tables and notes I have gathered and maintained for years into a simple monthly calendar. The information provided pertains mostly to the northeastern United States, as this is where I have developed my annual program. In the future I may expand and create additional calendars for other regions. However, the calendar can still be used a general guide for an annual program. Tables to calculate direct sowing and indoor seed starting dates have been provided in the back of this calendar. Throughout the calendar seeding dates have been included for many flowers and vegetables and the tables at the back can be used as quick references of to customize your calendar further.
